History

King County was created on the territory of Thurston County on December 22, 1852, and on January 11, 1853 Seattle was named the county seat. King County got its name thanks to the Alabama resident William Rufus King who was Vice President of the USA under President Franklin Pierce.

In 2005, the county was renamed after Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

County seat

Seattle is the county seat of King County. It is the biggest cultural, economic and educational center in this region. Seattle is situated on the coast and is considered to be major seaport.

The territories around Seattle have been inhabited for 4,000 years by Native Americans, and European settlement began in the middle of the 19th century.

Early settlements of this area were called New York-Alki and Duwamps, but in 1853 it was suggested to rename the biggest and the main settlement into Seattle in honor of Sealth, the chief of the local tribes.

Nowadays the city of Seattle is also called the “Emerald City” because of the magnificent evergreen forests that surround the area, and the Seattle residents are called Seattleites.
